Sodium Silicate

Airedale Chemical Sodium Silicate is available in both solid and solution form and (also known as Waterglass and liquid glass) holds the formula Na2(SiO2)nO. Its primary application is in cement for producing cardboard

Available in solid, a white to greenish opaque crystals and solution, a clear, odourless, viscous liquid.

Applications

Agrochemical

Aquaculture – Sodium silicate gel is also used as a substrate for algal growth in aquaculture hatcheries.

Building & Construction

Adhesive – largest application is as a cement for producing cardboard
Concrete treated with a sodium silicate solution helps to significantly reduce porosity in most masonry products such as concrete, stucco, plasters.
Sodium Silicate is used to create a crackle effect in pottery, usually wheel-thrown.

Detergent & Cleaning

Used in detergent auxiliaries like complex sodium disilicate and modified sodium disilicate (available from Airedale Chemical)

Engineering

Drilling fluids – frequently used in drilling fluids to stabilise borehole wells and to avoid collapse of bore walls
Automotive repair – used currently as an exhaust system joint and crack sealer for repairing mufflers, resonators, tailpipes and other exhaust components, with and without fiberglass reinforcing tapes.
Sodium silicate solution is used to inexpensively, quickly, and permanently disable automobile engines.

Sealing of leaking water containing structures 

Food & Beverage

Used as a food preservative
Homebrewing – Sodium silicates flocculant properties are also used to clarify wine and beer by precipitating colloidal particles.

Metal Processing

Metal repair – used, along with magnesium silicate, in muffler repair and fitting paste.

Life Science

Water glass is a useful binder of solids, such as vermiculite and perlite.

Textile

Used as a fixative for hand dyeing with reactive dyes that require a high pH in order to react with the textile fibre.

Water Treatment

Used as coagulant/flocculent agent in waste water treatment plants.
