After being shortlisted in the ‘Reputation’ category at the 2019 Chemical Industry Awards, we are proud to announce that we won the award.

With twelve awards up for grabs, the ceremony held at St George’s Hall in Liverpool, was a fantastic celebration of the best of the UK chemical industry.

The reputation award was given in recognition of an organisation who could demonstrate excellence and innovation in the building and enhancing of its reputation and that of the chemical industry.

We have transformed our reputation by establishing a creative and long-term partnership with our local primary school. By sharing our chemical knowledge and expertise we have enhanced our reputation through community and media relations reaching pupils, their families, local stakeholders, the regional community and industry peers – and inspired a new generation of scientists!

We are based in Cross Hills which is a tight-knit and partly residential area. Maintaining a close relationship with our neighbours has always been close to our hearts and we decided we wanted to give something back to our community and enhance our reputation at the same time.

We aim to develop links with our local community through the Airedale Foundation, which is our commitment to corporate social responsibility. We have done this through work placements, funding support, donation schemes and school links.

Since 2017 we have been inviting pupils from our local primary school to our site to learn more about us and what we do. Pupils spend the morning with us taking part in various activities. They complete experiments in the lab (which are linked to what they are studying in their science curriculum.), see a virtual tour of our site (to avoid potential health and safety hazards) and visit our fleet of privately-owned lorries allowing children into the driver’s cab.

We received fantastic feedback from the children and the school. We were no longer an ominous building in the village where unknown activity took place behind closed doors. We are an exciting and valuable part of the community which is open, caring and full of exciting opportunities.

We are extremely proud to have won the reputation award and are looking forward to the future of our relationship with the local community.
